Our Belief

St Peter's is an evangelical church and a member of the Church of England. This means that we accept the full and final authority of the Bible as the basis for all we believe.

In particular, we believe that in the Bible God has revealed everything we need to know about him, and our relationship with him. So, in accordance with the Bible and the foundation documents of the Church of England (The 39 Articles & The Book of Common Prayer) we believe that:

  • There is one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • Everyone has rebelled against God and deserves God's just punishment for sin.

  • Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary and lived a perfect life.

  • When he died, Jesus took upon himself the sin of the world and the just punishment for that sin.

  • After three days, Jesus rose again and appeared to many people. He ascended into heaven to reign with God the Father.

  • All who repent and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour receive forgiveness of sins and are filled with the Holy Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit gives gifts to all members of the church for the strengthening and growth of the church and the glory of God.

  • Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead, and will establish the new heaven and new earth.

What we aim to do

To live out the great commandment:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Love your neighbour as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39)

and the great commission:

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20)

We've summarised this as follows:

St. Peter’s exists

  • to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ
  • to encourage one another to live holy lives

and so to praise and glorify God.
